A Day in the Life of Evan
Evan is an Analyst with Trenegy currently working on a process improvement project for a large oil field services company.
7:30 AM-8:00 AM
I arrive bright and early at the client site, greeting my fellow team members with good mornings. The rest of my colleagues and I exchange brief stories about our weekends, filled with everything from weddings to white water rafting. I check my emails, update my Outlook calendar, and make a checklist of tasks to be completed by the end of the day.
8:30 AM-9:30 AM
The Trenegy team convenes for an informal meeting in one of the conference rooms to discuss goals for the week. Trenegy has been tasked with improving the client’s order to cash process, which has currently seen a significant increase in days sales outstanding (DSO) and is tying up the company’s cash flow. We determine that the highest priority task at this point is to interview key client personnel involved in this process to identify areas in need of improvement. The team divvies up the interviews accordingly.
9:30 AM-10:00 AM
I am tasked with interviewing a local branch manager, the billings/collections manager, and the CFO by the end of the week. I begin drafting up questions while I send out emails asking what time works best for each individual. The CFO responds almost immediately and informs me that he can sit down with me in 30 minutes. I quickly review my notes from previous steering committee meetings in preparation, paying particular attention the client’s guiding principles established at the onset of the project.
10:00 AM-11:30 AM
We meet in his office and begin discussing the desired future state of the order to cash process. The CFO goes over the companies’ various financial statements with me in detail, highlighting areas that are being affected by the current process. I ask plenty of questions and take diligent notes so that I can relay the information back to the rest of the team later.
11:30 AM-12:30 PM
I meet up with the rest of the Trenegy team to decide on where to go to lunch. Given that the client is in Houston, the unanimous consensus is Mexican. We pile up in a few cars and head to El Tiempo (my personal favorite).
12:30 PM-2:30 PM
We return to the office and I begin working on updating several key deliverables, particularly the issues log, with the information that I received from the CFO earlier. I also prepare a presentation deck for our project lead who will showcase our initial findings to the steering committee this afternoon.
2:30 PM-3:30 PM
I head towards the main conference room for the weekly steering committee meeting with the CEO, CFO, project sponsor and other key stakeholders. We bring the committee up to speed on the progress we’ve made so far, and lay out our goals for the upcoming weeks. The client provides valuable feedback and is happy to hear that the project is on-schedule and under budget.
3:30 PM-3:45 PM
I run to the breakroom to grab a much needed afternoon coffee and begin making small talk with a member of the client’s IT staff. Turns out he’s a fellow University of Florida grad like myself (Go Gators!), so we naturally share our predictions about the upcoming football season.
3:45 PM- 5:00 PM
I join a few other Trenegy team members to listen to a sales presentation via GoToMeeting from a relatively new FP&A software vendor. We as a team are very impressed with the live demo, and schedule a follow up meeting to include one of our managing directors. We’re always excited about the possibility of partnering with other innovative companies to help best serve our clients’ needs!
5:00 PM- 6:00 PM
I return to working on my deliverables from earlier, and update the project status report. After running my work by some other team members, I send off a few last emails and head home for the night.
